TVP or textured vegetable protein has turned out to be
a very useful addition to our boat provisioning
since it doesn’t require refrigeration (our little cooler space is at a premium).
I don’t use it often but it is a great stand-in when a quick meal is required…
and I mean quick…
…once hydrated the TVP has the appearance of ground chicken or turkey
and takes on the flavours of whatever seasoning is used.
…this sweet spicy sauce gives the dish its wonderful Asian flavour.
1 cup *TVP (see Galley Kat Note below)
1 cup hot water
1 tbsp sesame oil
3 cloves garlic, minced
2 cups mushrooms. sliced
1 cup mini sweet red peppers, sliced
green onions, sliced (reserve some green for garnish)
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup soy sauce or Bragg seasoning
1 tbsp grated ginger
1 teaspoon crushed red peppers (or more is you prefer spicy)
sea salt & pepper to taste
sesame seeds to garnish
cooked brown rice
Add equal parts of TVP and hot water and set aside.
Heat sesame oil and sauté garlic gently until fragrant.
Add peppers, mushrooms and onions and continue to sauté for 2-3 minutes
Whisk together brown sugar, Bragg seasoning, chilis and ginger and add to pan
Stir in **TVP (see Galley Kat Note below)
Serve over brown rice.
Garnish with green onion
Didn’t I promise quick?
A word about whether the Captain enjoyed it:
“I think I’ll have a little bit more”, he says.
(twice the size of his first helping)
I guess he REALLY liked it.
Galley Kat Note:
*my choice of TVP is non-GMO certified organic.
**the TVP, once hydrated, doesn’t need cooking
so take care not to simmer or it may become a bit mushy.
